Hi, I'm the creator behind Home Sweet Automated.
My passion for smart home technology started with a simple question: how far could I actually integrate the devices in my home? Not with a dozen different hubs each demanding their own proprietary app — but into one coherent system that just works.
I have my neighbours to thank for the answer. They introduced me to Home Assistant. I started with a Home Assistant Green and a ZBT-2 Zigbee stick. That's it. From there, slowly and steadily, I wired my home together piece by piece — Hue lights and Alexa speakers, a Solis solar inverter and a Marstek home battery, a Ratio EV charger and my electric car, Siemens kitchen appliances and an AEG washing machine, Buienradar weather forecasts and WhatsApp notifications, Withings health monitors, a PS5, a TV. All of it, talking to each other, in one place.
It was an incredibly nerdy and deeply satisfying journey. Inspired by curiosity and other people's generosity in sharing their knowledge online, assisted by AI, and stubbornly resisting the temptation to just buy a subscription that would hand me everything pre-configured. The goal was never to throw money at the problem. It was to understand it — and to build something that runs itself without needing constant attention.
One thing I want to be clear about: I didn't invent any of this. The integrations, the protocols, the custom components — those are the work of a remarkable open-source community. What I did was go through the process of figuring it all out, make a lot of mistakes, and then write it down in a way that might save the next person some of the trouble I went through.
